Our local U14 Team, Newport Gaels were unsuccessful in their bid to win an historic County 'A' Championship double when they were unlucky to lose out to Clonoulty-Rossmore in the Ragg last Saturday. Having won the County 'A' Footbal title earlier in the year they were hoping to add the hurling title also. A great win over the South champions Ballingarry in the semi-final meant they went into the final in confident mood. However, Clonoulty had other ideas and in a close hard fought encounter they
emerged victorious on a 1-5 to 0-5 scoreline. This was a disappointing end to what has been a very successful season for this fine bunch of players. They started the year by winning the North Peil na nÓg competition and soon followed that up with victories in the North and County Football finals. Success in the North hurling followed and unfortunately they fell at the final hurdle in their quest for the County double. The panel of players was Sean Belfry Walshe, Cathal Floyd, Jack Delahunty, Mattias Allen, Harry Sheehy, Kealan Floyd, Corie Mooney, Cian Flanagan, Kevin Connolly, Aaron O'Neill, Jonathon Coyle, Michael Gorman, Colin Floyd, Paul Hogan, Dara Carroll, Greg O'Gorman, Niall Harrington, Tiernan Ryan, Jack Connolly, Brian Keane, Thomas Floyd, Dade Ricter and Sean Moloney.
Team Mentors were Joe Floyd, James Flanagan and Anthony Floyd.
During the year four of this panel, Cian Flanagan, Kealan Floyd, Dara Carroll and Jack Delahunty, played with the Tipperay footballers while Kealan, Dara and Jack also played with the Tipperary hurlers. We look
forward to having more representation on Tipperary teams in the years to come.
The panel would like to thank all their supporters for turning out in such numbers last Saturday. They would also like to thank Dinny Ryan Cooper, James Nolan, William Carroll and Clement Ryan for sponsoring a set of gear bags and also Alon Mooney for sponsoring the reception for them back at the club house after the game.
Hard luck to our Intermediate Hurling team who lost to Silvermines on Sunday in the North semi-final.
Final Score: Silvermines 2-12 Newport 1-10.
Congratulations to Allon & Bernie Flynn, Birdhill who won 1st prize in the Tipperary Draw. Allon is currently a selector with the Under 12's.
