Congratulations to Newport Boys N.S. on their very successful Mini Football Tournament held in Lacken Pk. last Thurs. Schools from Birdhill, Ballinahinch and Newport participated. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Rearcross were forced to drop out earlier in the week. Birdhill, under manager Joe Floyd, put in spirited displays in both their matches but were unable to match the scoring power of the other two sides. Before the final, Mr. McCormack organized a display of football by the younger classes in Newport B.N.S. and judging from this, the school should have no trouble fielding a decent team in years to come. The final proved to be a very keenly contested affair, with Ballinahinch looking very comfortable at half time 4 pts up. However the Newport side came out for the second half with determination and both sides thrilled the spectators with some of the best football seen in Lacken Pk in recent times. With seconds to go, Newport 2pts ahead looked set for victory but Ballinahinch made one final surge to score the winning goal snatching victory by 1pt before the final whistle sounded. It was a great tournament and well done to all who participated. Thanks to Mr. Skehane for organizing the event and a big thank you to the club helpers who turned out on the day to ensure the event ran smoothly.
The St. Mary's Under 16½ side bowed out of the Munster Schools when they were heavily defeated by Pallaskenry in Clarina last Thurs. The Under 18½'s are due to play Tralee after mid-term.
St. Mary's had a narrow win in the Munster Championship when they defeated a fancied Kilmacthomas side in Boherlahan last Wednesday with a scoreline of 3-9 to 2-11. A crucial goal by Davy Gleeson just before half time helped settle Mary's while their second goal came from impact sub Daniel Carew in the second half. Kevin Mulcahy's 6 pts from frees also helped Mary's secure victory.
St Mary's Under 16½'s play Ballingarry in Dr. Morris Pk this Monday (15th).
Primary coaching continues weekly in Birdhill, Lackamore & Newport B.N.S. We will shortly commence coaching in the Convent Primary. After-school-training continues in St.Mary's with the help of the local clubs while Mr. Bourke continues to keep the flag flying in St. Joseph's.
CLG Tulach Sheasta are hosting fundraising table quiz on Friday 19th in Ryans pub Cork Rd. at 9:30p.m. Please come to support your local club.
Congratulations to the Newport/Ballinahinch Under 14 camogie team on winning the Co League Final on Sunday. They turned the tables on Nenagh who had beaten them in the championship earlier in the year.
