James O’Rourke Memorial : The Juvenile Club hosted the Annual James O’Rourke Memorial U11 & U12 Gaelic Football Tournament last Sunday. It was a great success with 7 clubs from 6 different counties taking part over the course of the day. At under 11 level, Newport were joined by Cuala of Dublin, Shamrocks of Offaly and Mungret Saint Pauls of Limerick, while at under 12 Croom from Limerick, Wolfe Tones from Clare and Whitechurch from Cork provided the opposition. Both Newport teams played fantastic football throughout running out winners in both finals. The club would like thank all those who supplied food, volunteered to help  and supported the club on the day. Thanks also to all the teams who came along and participated to make it a great day and a special thanks to Shane Gavin coach of the u12s for all his time in organising the special event which was a fitting tribute to James.

Under 15B Hurling Plate: Hard luck to our under 15 hurlers who were beaten by Ballinahinch / Templederry in this competition last Sunday morning by 2-10 to 2-04.

Under 11 Hurling Plate: Hard luck to our Under 11C hurling team who lost  the North Final last Saturday afternoon in Puckane. Having won their semi final clash V Shannon Rovers by 3-02 to 2-03 in a very exciting and tough battle, they faced Portroe in the final. Portroe got off to a great start but Newport fought to the very end losing out by 3-03 to 2-02.

Under 9’s : We had two teams at the annual Kilmacud Crokes festival of hurling held in UCD Belfield in Dublin on Sunday.  There was 10 clubs represented with 24 teams in total taking part from all over the country. Newport Sharks team had victories over Craughwell (Galway) and Kilmacud (Dublin) and were narrowly beaten by Oranmore (Galway) in their group matches. They qualified for the final V Kilmacud and had a wonderful victory with a great display of heart and determination. The Tigers team recorded wins V Kilmacud Crokes  and Ferns (Wexford)  but lost to Monaleen in their group matches. They went on to beat Clane (Kildare ) in their final wrap up, an unreal day of games for both teams.
A big thank you to Kilmacud Crokes club for the invite & organising a brilliant day's hurling for all the teams. Also thanks to the parents that travelled to Dublin to support both teams.

Under 7 & 8’s:  played their first tournaments last Saturday in Roscrea in the Jack Ryan Perpetual Cup. Both age groups had two teams in the touraments playing teams from Borrisleiogh & Roscrea. All of the teams played brilliantly throughout with Newport teams from both age groups qualifying for their respective finals v Roscrea where the under 8’s lost out narrowly & the under 7’s having a great win. Thanks to Roscrea for inviting us and to all the parents who made the trip to support the team.

Under 6’s: had their final training session of the season on Saturday morning in Lacken Park, after what was hopefully the first of many enjoyable  years involved with the club. There was some great skills on display as always with amazing progress made by all these kids since last March. Sincere gratitude to all the coaches for all their work during the year and  to all the parents for choosing to get this great bunch of kids involved and for all their ongoing support. Thanks on the morning to our All-Ireland winning clubman Seán O’Brien for coming along to present some medals. Hope to see everyone back in the new year for more fun and games!

Condolences: The club would like to extend our deepest sympathy to our Juvenile Chairperson Ollie Kennedy, his brother Val and sister Therese and the extended Kennedy family on the recent passing of their mother Kathleen (R.I.P.).  Ar dheis Lámh Dé go raibh a hanam.
