Under 11A Hurling Plate: Well done to our Under 11A hurling team who won the North Final last Sunday morning in Puckane. First up was a semi final clash v Borrisoleigh which they won by 6-06 to 5-02. They then went on to face Toomevara in the final in what proved to be a very exciting game in which the lead changed a number of times before Newport eventually won out on a score of 2-05 to 2-03.

Under 11C Hurling Plate: The Under 11 C team won their final group match v Templederry last Wednesday evening & have now qualified for the North Semi Final which is due to be played this Saturday morning with the winners progressing to the final to be held immediately after the semi finals. Please check our Facebook page for confirmation of these fixtures.

James O’Rourke Memorial: All roads lead to Lacken Park  this Sunday as Newport G.A.A. Club hosts the Annual James O’Rourke Memorial U11 & U12 Gaelic Football Tournament. This year promises to be a real festival of the sport as 7 clubs from 6 different counties take part over the course of the day. At under 11 level, Newport will be joined by Cuala of Dublin, Shamrocks of Offaly and Mungret Saint Pauls of Limerick, while at under 12, we will host Croom from Limerick, Wolfe Tones from Clare and Whitechurch from Cork. Festivities begin with a parade at 11:00 AM in Lacken Park, and the first games throw in at 11.30. All support would be appreciated to make this a very special day for all the young players, and a fitting tribute to James.

Under 9’s:  took part in the Monaleen Festival of hurling last Saturday. There were 14 teams in total taking part with clubs from Kinvara Co Galway, Sixmilebridge Co Clare, Charleville Co Cork, Naas Co. Kildare, Cashel and ourselves from Tipp and Monaleen representing Limerick.  We had 2 teams, the Sharks and Tigers, representing Newport. Both teams played 3 games winning 2 each.  We had 30 players who all played their part in an excellent event. Thanks to Monaleen GAA for organizing a super blitz and for their hospitality. Tom McCabe from Newport won the long poc competition which was a great bonus on a great day.

Under 6’s:  Four under 6 teams travelled to a brilliantly organised blitz in Ballina last Saturday morning playing 3 games each against Ballina and Smith O’Briens from Killaloe.  Some great hurling played by all the kids for our final blitz of the year. We will have a medal presentation to all the kids at our final session this Saturday 28th with training. Massive thanks to all the parents for travelling to Ballina on Saturday & for all their help & support throughout the year. It was really appreciated.

Handball: Newport Handball Club would like to invite all boys & girls from age 6 to 12 age groups to their open day this Saturday Sept 28th in St. Joseph’s College, Handball Alley from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM.
