AGM: The club will be holding its AGM on Wednesday December 4th @ 8:00pm  in the clubhouse. We would encourage as many people as possible to attend this meeting and have your say in the future of our club.  Click here to download Nomination Paper - closing date for nominations and motions is 16th November.

Under 21’s: Hard luck to our Under 21’s who suffered a disappointing loss in  their North Championship match v  Ballinahinch/Templederry in Lacken Park on Saturday. This unfortunately brings to an end our interest in this competition. We would like to thank all the players and management for their efforts this year and hope for better days ahead for this group of players.

Under 9 & 10’s : played the 1st rould of our parish football league in Murroe astroturf last Saturday morning. We have 4 teams of 11 players taking part. They had two very competitive matches on Saturday and really enjoyed their morning's football. We will bre playing round 2 in Murroe this Saturday @ 10:00 AM.

 Scor: The County Scór na nÓg final is scheduled for the 1st of December in Holycross. If any secondary school children are interested in taking part please contact Anthony Floyd on 086 8070182 for further details.

Under 21’s: Well done to our Under 21 hurlers who won their first championship game V Templederry / Ballinahinch last Sunday in Templederry on a scoreline of  1-16 to 2-11. We again face Ballinahinch / Templederry in Lacken Park this Saturday @ 14:00 with the winner on overall aggerate score over the two matches qualifying for the North Semi Final.

Under 11’s : Had two teams in Na Piarsaigh last Sunday afternoon for two games.  The children really enjoyed their afternoon despite the weather and put in some excellent performances. Thanks to Na Piarsaigh club for the invite and to the parents for taking the time to bring their children to the games. It was really appreciated.

Under 21’s: We would like to wish the under 21 hurlers the very best of luck in their first match in the North B championship v Ballinahinch/Templederry this Sunday Nov 3rd in Templederry @ 12:00 noon. Your support for the team would be greatly appreciated.

Under 8’s : The under 8’s travelled to Cappawhite last Monday evening for a hurling blitz. The children really enjoyed their evening's hurling despite the cold weather. Thanks to Cappawhite club for the invite and to the parents for taking the time to bring their children on a Bank Holiday. It was really appreciated.

Munster Junior Camogie Final: The club hosted the Camogie Munster Junior Club Championship Final last Saturday between Clanmaurice (Kerry) & Doora Barefield (Clare) with the Kerry side winning by 2-11 to 1-06. The club would like to thank everybody who volunteered to help out on the day to make the hosting of the final possible & James Flanagan our development officer for having the pitch in excellent condition for the match.

Under 7’s to 10’s: had their end of season blitz on Saturday morning in Lacken Park. Over 100 kids participated in skills competitions and mini blitzes. The event was attended by members of the Newport senior hurling panel, Sean O'Brien, Michael Flannery, Jack Delahunty and Conor Floyd who helped in the demonstrating some of the skills competitions. Our inter county star Sean O'Brien presented the kids with their end of season medals . Thanks to all who helped in organising a great morning. Special thanks to Joe Hogan for organising the treats for the children and to Adrian Daly for providing food for all the adults. Our local CRF First Responders were also in attendance and they gave life saving CPR training to a number of parents.
A special word of thanks to all the parents, kids and coaches for their time and effort this year.

Under 12’s: played in the Moneygall Hurling Tourament last Sunday morning. They played teams from Moneygall, Boherlahan-Dualla & Morcarkey–Borris in the group matches recording two victories & narrowly lost out to Moneygall. They went on to win the Shield final v Boherlahan–Dualla. A big thank you to Moneygall for the invite & organising a great tournament which was enjoyed by all.

Under 11’s : took part in the Upperchurch/Drombane Football tournament last Saturday morning. They played teams from Upperchurch-Drombane, JK Brackens, Portroe and Burgess and really enjoyed their morning’s football. A big thank you to Upperchurch–Drombane for the invite & organising the tournament.

Under 10’s: entered two teams in the Munster Hurling Blitz in Dr. Morris Park last Saturday morning. They played teams from Carrigaline (Cork), Youghal (Cork), Kilmallock (Limerick) , Cratloe (Clare), Killavullen (Cork) & St. Marys (Tipp). The children really enjoyed their mornings hurling & thanks to Andy Ryan GDA for organising same.

Condolences: The club would like to extend deepest sympathies to Lil O’Grady, her daughters Siobhan & Noreen and the extended O’Grady family on the recent passing of Sean. We would also like to extend our symapthies to Sean Ryan his sons Raphael and Marcus and daughter Marguerite and the extended Ryan family on the passing of Josephine. Ar dheis Lámh Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.

Under 11’s : Newport entered two teams in the Dicksboro (Kilkenny) Charity Blitz last Saturday. Despite the weather, the children really enjoyed a great day & welcomed the opportunity to meet up with Dicksboro again after their previous meeting in the All Ireland Community Games final earlier in the year. We played Dicksboro, John Lockes , Danesfort, Rower Inistioge, Valley Rovers (Cork) & Faythe Harriers (Wexford) and put in some great performances. A big thank you to Dicksboro for the invite & organising a brilliant day's hurling for all the teams. Also thanks to the parents that travelled to Kilkenny to support both teams.

James O’Rourke Memorial : The Juvenile Club hosted the Annual James O’Rourke Memorial U11 & U12 Gaelic Football Tournament last Sunday. It was a great success with 7 clubs from 6 different counties taking part over the course of the day. At under 11 level, Newport were joined by Cuala of Dublin, Shamrocks of Offaly and Mungret Saint Pauls of Limerick, while at under 12 Croom from Limerick, Wolfe Tones from Clare and Whitechurch from Cork provided the opposition. Both Newport teams played fantastic football throughout running out winners in both finals. The club would like thank all those who supplied food, volunteered to help  and supported the club on the day. Thanks also to all the teams who came along and participated to make it a great day and a special thanks to Shane Gavin coach of the u12s for all his time in organising the special event which was a fitting tribute to James.

 

Under 15B Hurling Plate: Hard luck to our under 15 hurlers who were beaten by Ballinahinch / Templederry in this competition last Sunday morning by 2-10 to 2-04.  

Under 11 Hurling Plate: Hard luck to our Under 11C hurling team who lost  the North Final last Saturday afternoon in Puckane. Having won their semi final clash V Shannon Rovers by 3-02 to 2-03 in a very exciting and tough battle, they faced Portroe in the final. Portroe got off to a great start but Newport fought to the very end losing out by 3-03 to 2-02. 

Under 9’s : We had two teams at the annual Kilmacud Crokes festival of hurling held in UCD Belfield in Dublin on Sunday.  There was 10 clubs represented with 24 teams in total taking part from all over the country. Newport Sharks team had victories over Craughwell (Galway) and Kilmacud (Dublin) and were narrowly beaten by Oranmore (Galway) in their group matches. They qualified for the final V Kilmacud and had a wonderful victory with a great display of heart and determination. The Tigers team recorded wins V Kilmacud Crokes  and Ferns (Wexford)  but lost to Monaleen in their group matches. They went on to beat Clane (Kildare ) in their final wrap up, an unreal day of games for both teams.
A big thank you to Kilmacud Crokes club for the invite & organising a brilliant day's hurling for all the teams. Also thanks to the parents that travelled to Dublin to support both teams.

Under 7 & 8’s:  played their first tournaments last Saturday in Roscrea in the Jack Ryan Perpetual Cup. Both age groups had two teams in the touraments playing teams from Borrisleiogh & Roscrea. All of the teams played brilliantly throughout with Newport teams from both age groups qualifying for their respective finals v Roscrea where the under 8’s lost out narrowly & the under 7’s having a great win. Thanks to Roscrea for inviting us and to all the parents who made the trip to support the team.

Under 6’s: had their final training session of the season on Saturday morning in Lacken Park, after what was hopefully the first of many enjoyable  years involved with the club. There was some great skills on display as always with amazing progress made by all these kids since last March. Sincere gratitude to all the coaches for all their work during the year and  to all the parents for choosing to get this great bunch of kids involved and for all their ongoing support. Thanks on the morning to our All-Ireland winning clubman Seán O’Brien for coming along to present some medals. Hope to see everyone back in the new year for more fun and games!

Condolences: The club would like to extend our deepest sympathy to our Juvenile Chairperson Ollie Kennedy, his brother Val and sister Therese and the extended Kennedy family on the recent passing of their mother Kathleen (R.I.P.).  Ar dheis Lámh Dé go raibh a hanam.

Under 11A Hurling Plate: Well done to our Under 11A hurling team who won the North Final last Sunday morning in Puckane. First up was a semi final clash v Borrisoleigh which they won by 6-06 to 5-02. They then went on to face Toomevara in the final in what proved to be a very exciting game in which the lead changed a number of times before Newport eventually won out on a score of 2-05 to 2-03. 

Under 11C Hurling Plate: The Under 11 C team won their final group match v Templederry last Wednesday evening & have now qualified for the North Semi Final which is due to be played this Saturday morning with the winners progressing to the final to be held immediately after the semi finals. Please check our Facebook page for confirmation of these fixtures.

James O’Rourke Memorial: All roads lead to Lacken Park  this Sunday as Newport G.A.A. Club hosts the Annual James O’Rourke Memorial U11 & U12 Gaelic Football Tournament. This year promises to be a real festival of the sport as 7 clubs from 6 different counties take part over the course of the day. At under 11 level, Newport will be joined by Cuala of Dublin, Shamrocks of Offaly and Mungret Saint Pauls of Limerick, while at under 12, we will host Croom from Limerick, Wolfe Tones from Clare and Whitechurch from Cork. Festivities begin with a parade at 11:00 AM in Lacken Park, and the first games throw in at 11.30. All support would be appreciated to make this a very special day for all the young players, and a fitting tribute to James.

Under 9’s:  took part in the Monaleen Festival of hurling last Saturday. There were 14 teams in total taking part with clubs from Kinvara Co Galway, Sixmilebridge Co Clare, Charleville Co Cork, Naas Co. Kildare, Cashel and ourselves from Tipp and Monaleen representing Limerick.  We had 2 teams, the Sharks and Tigers, representing Newport. Both teams played 3 games winning 2 each.  We had 30 players who all played their part in an excellent event. Thanks to Monaleen GAA for organizing a super blitz and for their hospitality. Tom McCabe from Newport won the long poc competition which was a great bonus on a great day.

Under 6’s:  Four under 6 teams travelled to a brilliantly organised blitz in Ballina last Saturday morning playing 3 games each against Ballina and Smith O’Briens from Killaloe.  Some great hurling played by all the kids for our final blitz of the year. We will have a medal presentation to all the kids at our final session this Saturday 28th with training. Massive thanks to all the parents for travelling to Ballina on Saturday & for all their help & support throughout the year. It was really appreciated.

Handball: Newport Handball Club would like to invite all boys & girls from age 6 to 12 age groups to their open day this Saturday Sept 28th in St. Joseph’s College, Handball Alley from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM.

Under 13 Hurling: Hard luck to our Under 13 Hurlers who lost their North Under 13 B Plate Hurling  Semi Final v Moneygall last Sunday on a score line of 1-06 to 1-03.

Under 11 Hurling Plate: We had three teams in action in this competition last Saturday morning in Lacken Park. The Under 11 Group A team lost out to Toomevara on a scoreloine of 8-09 to 6-06. The Group C team were beaten by a very good Shannon Rovers team by 4-07 to 3-01. The Group D team were beaten by Toomevara by 0-02 to 0-01. The Group A & C  teams both have their final group matches this Wednesday evening away v Borrisoleigh @ 7:00 PM & Templederry @ 6:45 PM  respectively.

Kilmacud Crokes All Ireland Under 11’s: Two under 11 teams travelled to Dublin on Sunday for the annual Kilmacud Crokes All Ireland Festival of Hurling. The A team recorded victories over Buffer’s Alley (Wexford), Douglas (Cork) & Tramore (Waterford) in their group matches before losing out to Craughhwell ( Galway ) in the final on a scoreline of 2-07 to 2-02. The B team won their group matches v  Tramore (Waterford), Douglas (Cork) & Kilmacud Crokes and went on to win their final v Sarsfields (Cork) by 5-02 to 1-02.  The children really enjoyed their day in Dublin & a big thank you to Kilmacud Crokes for the invite & organising a great day’s hurling.

Seniors: Hard luck to our Senior Hurlers who lost out to Holycross/Ballycahill in Dundrum last Saturday in their final group game in The Seamus O Riain Cup on a scoreline of 1-18 to 1-17. We would like to thank all the players & the management team for their hard work & dedication this year.

Under 14: Hard luck to our Under 14 team who were beaten by Portroe in the North C final last Tuesday evening in a very competitive & excitinhg final by 7-06 to 6-06. We would like to thank all players & management for all their hard work they put in during the year.

Under 13 Hurling Plate: Our under 13 Group B team had a great win over Moneygall last Sunday evening coming from 9 points down at half time to win on a scoreline of 4-08 to 4-07. They have  their final group match in this competition v Kildangan on Tuesday evening of this week.

Under 11 Hurling Plate: We had two teams in action in this competition this week. The Under 11 Group A team had a good win over Kilruane on a scoreline of 2-12 to 2-07. The Group C team drew with Portroe in their game.  All teams are in action this week with their final group games due to be played this Saturday morning. The Group A team are away to Toomevara @ 10:00. The Group C  & D teams have home games v Shannon Rovers & Toomevara @ 10:00 & 11:00 respectively.

Under  9’s & 10’s:  enjoyed a great days hurling in Ballina on Sunday in the John Joe Nevin & Des Nevin Tournaments competing against teams from Ballina, Smith O’Briens Killaloe, Clonlara, Ahane & Murroe/Boher. The Under 10’s won the B Final v Smith O’Briens.  We had two under 9 teams in the competition. The ‘Sharks’ team won a very exciting A Final v Clonlara by a single point. The ‘Tigers Team won the C Final V Ballina. A big thank you to Ballina Club for the invite & for organising a fantastic day’s hurling for all the children. It was really appreciated by both parents & children.

Wheelchair Hurling : is coming to Tipperary on Saturday 14th Sept. It will take place at St Mary's Secondary School Newport Co Tipperary. Every year each of the provinces hosts a round of the League competition and this years Munster leg is being held in Newport.  Each of the 4 provinces will have a team taking part . The opening ceremony will take place at 10.30a.m with games commencing at 11a.m. In June this year 12 wheelchair hurlers (3 from each province) represented Ireland at the International Floorball competition competing against 9 other nations. This was a fantastic experience for the wheelchair hurlers.

The Munster team is made up of players from Clare, Limerick and Kerry. Training takes place once a week in Limerick . We would be delighted to have players from Tipperary. If you know of any wheelchair user that might be interested let them know about the event in Newport and they can get further details about Wheelchair hurling from Gerry McNamara 085 1901900 or Dave Fitzgerald 083 8168143.

The GAA at Croke Park and Munster GAA are fully supportive of wheelchair hurling and have recognised it as part of the GAA's Games for all programme.

 

Dawn to Dusk training session: in aid of Nutrture Africa is been hosted by the club this Sunday in Lacken Park by our senior hurler Odran Floyd. All age groups in the club are taking part in order to raise funds for this very worthy cause on this Sunday Sept. 15th from  7:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
