Seniors:  A very much understrength senior hurling team lost out to JK Brackens in their county league game last Sunday on a scoreline of Newport 2-08 to JK Brackens 1-20.  They made an impressive opening with a Pa Ryan goal after three minutes but this early warning  from the Newport full forward was soon curtailed as JK Brackens applied an extra man in front of him to limit the threat. Newport suffered a killer blow in the 25th minute as their goalkeeper Paul Hogan was judged to have stepped over his line to concede an unfortunate goal which extended the Brackens lead to four points. Three more points gave them a half time lead of 1-13 to 1-5. In the second half Brackens ace forward Lyndon Fairbrother continued to punish Newport's careless tackling, as he ended up with a personal tally of 14 points of which eleven were from frees. Newport continued to press hard and a late goal by Kealan Floyd put respectability on the scoreboard as JK Brackens ran out deserving winners.

Juniors: The Junior Hurlers match v Kilruane MacDonaghs due to be played last weekend was postponed as a mark of respect to the late Michael Cahill (RIP) of Kilruane.

Minors: The minor hurlers put in a great performance in a high scoring game v Silvermines last Wednesday evening but unfortunately lost out on a final scoreline of 5-14 to 4-13. They have a home game v Moneygall this Wednesday evening May 8th @ 7:00 PM.

Under 16’s The under 16 footballers had a good win in their North Football Semi Final v  Ballinahinch / Templederry in Lacken Park  last Monday evening on a scoreline of Newport 2-5 to Ballinahinch / Templederrys 0-04. The North Final is due to be played this weekend. Please check our Facebook page for fixture details.

Under 14 Football: Our Under 14 Group A team lost their final group match away to Ballina last Thursday evening on a scoreline of Newport 3-06 to Ballina’s 1-15. They have now qualified for the North Semi Final which is an away game v Nenagh this Thursday evening May 9th @ 7:00 PM.

Under 12’s: The Under 12 Group C team had a good win in their North Semi Final V Nenagh on a scoreline of 5-05 to 2-05. Their North Final v Borrisokane was played on Bank Holiday Monday, when the young side lost out by 2-4 to 0-4.   The Under 12 Group D team put in a great performance in their semi-final v Ballina but missed out by a single score after extra time on a scoreline of Newport 2-00 to Ballina 1-04.

The best of luck to Sean O’Brien & the Tipp Hurlers in their opening match in the Munster Hurling Championship v Cork this Sunday & to Jack Delahunty & the Tipp Footballers in their game V Limerick on Saturday.

Congratulations to Mark Forde who recently made his debut for the Tipperary Under 14 Football team as goalkeeper in a tournament in which they played teams from Limerick, Clare & Waterford in which Tipperary won all their games. Seniors: Hard luck to our senior’s hurlers who lost out narrowly to Lorrha in their county league game last Sunday in Lacken Park on a scoreline of Newport 2-17 to Lorrha 0-24. Their next game in the county league is away to JK Brackens this Sunday May 5th @ 12:00 noon. Dan Donoghue was the hero for Lorrha as he scored two late points to snatch victory from Newport in this exciting high scoring Co SH League game. There was nothing between the sides all through but two goals in the first half by Daragh Carroll and Daniel Carew gave Newport the edge to lead at half time by 2-11 to 0-12. Lorrha had the greater scoring power in the second half adding a further 12 points with Cian Hogan and Eoin McIntyre to the fore whilst Newport were dependent on the free taking of Eoin Shinnors to stay in the game. With the game in the melting pot in the closing stages a melee involving many players resulted in the dismissal of Shinnors and Lorrha's Ciaran Hough by referee Ger Fitzpatrick. Donoghue's brace of points in the final minutes gave Lorrha a two point lead as Odhran Floyd pulled it back to a single score with a free in added time. But time ran out for the home side, as Lorrha went home happy having secured both points from this exciting league game.

Seniors: Hard luck to our Senior Hurlers who were beaten in the 1st round of the North Senior Championship by Borris- Ileigh last Sunday in Dolla. Seniors:  Well done to our Senior Hurlers who won their County League Match v Shannon Rovers last Thursday evening in Puckane on a final scoreline of 2-16 to 1-09.  This was their second brace of points in the County League with a comprehensive victory over a dogged Shannon Rovers outfit. Newport were in control from an early stage, but a defensive error midway through the first half let Rovers in for a goal. The dismissal of county man Sean O'Brien for a red card offence just before the break was one of the main talking points at the interval when the score stood at Newport 1-9 Shannon Rovers 1-4. Pa Ryan was the goal scorer and when he raised another green flag after 20 minutes of the second half, the game was decided. Conor O'Mahony was assured in defence, Andrew Hickey & Cian Flanagan were an industrious midfield partnership, while Pa Ryan and Eoin Shinners threatened most up front.

Best wishes to Patrick Hickey for a speedy recovery from the injury he received in the game.

We would like to wish our Seniors the best of luck in the 1st round of The Seamus O’Riain Cup v Silvermines this Saturday evening @ 6:00 PM in Nenagh. Your support for the team would be really appreciated.

Under 14 Féile Hurling: Well done to our Under 14 Hurlers who won their Feile County Semi Final v Galtee Rovers last Saturday in Cappawhite on a final scoreline of 5-06 to 0-06.  Galtee Rovers started the game brightly with a well taken point in the first minute, quickly followed by a point from a free. Newport thundered into the game with 2 goals in 2 minutes from Brian Tobin and James Moloney, who flicked a long delivery to the net. Both teams traded points from frees before Tom Allen knocked over a fine effort with Galtee replying almost immediately with a point from a free. That pattern continued with another Tom Allen point after 16 minutes but Galtee kept the scoreboard ticking over with another free. The Galtee Rovers keeper, who had earlier produced 2 fine saves, was beaten as Brian Tobin finished to the net in the 21st minute but they got the last score of the half with a point from a free to leave Newport ahead  3-3 to 0-6 at the break.  The early stages of the second half were tight, but Newport's half-back line and mid-field gained the upper hand with their long clearances piling the pressure on the Galtee Rover's defence. James Moloney pointed after good work from the full forward line, before Brian Tobin goaled to complete his hat-trick in the ninth minute of the second half. Points from James Tobin and Brian Tobin along with a goal from Tom Allen saw Newport finish winners on a scoreline of 5-6 to 0-6. Well done to all the players who worked extremely hard throughout, blocking, hooking and tackling, never letting Galtee Rovers gain a sustained foothold in the game.  Best of luck in the county final v JK Brackens in Clonoulty next Saturday at 1.30pm.

Junior Hurling:  Well done to our Junior Hurlers who recorded their 1st victory in the North Junior 'A' league with a win over Knockshegowna last Saturday evening in Lacken Park on a final scoreline of 2-17 to 0-19.

Minors: The best of luck to our Minor hurlers in their League match v Portroe which is due to be played this Thursday evening in Lacken Park @ 6:00PM.

Under 16’s : The best of luck to our Under 16 footballers who are due to play their 2nd match of the championship v Kilruane in Lacken Park next Monday evening April 8th @ 7:00PM.

Under 12’s: Well done to both our under 12 teams who played their 1st game of the football championship last Saturday. Our Under 12 Group 'C' Team had a hard-earned victory over Nenagh on a final scoreline of 2-02 to 2-01. Our Under 12 Group B team despite putting in a great performance were defeated by a fine Moneygall team on a scoreline of 4-05 to 1-02. Two of our under 12 teams have away matches this Saturday. Our Group B team play Lorrha & our Group C team play Ballinahinch, with both matches having a 3:00 PM start.

Under 8’s : Played their 1st County Football Blitz in  Dr. Morris Park last Saturday. They really enjoyed their morning playing teams from Upperchurch, JK Brackens & Loughmore. A big thank you to Paudie Malone & Andy Ryam for organising the blitz.

Community Games: Well done to our Under 10 Football Team & Under 11 Hurling team who won their 1st round matches v Portroe & Roscrea last weekend.

President's Visit: Tulach Sheasta celebrated two important milestones in the club with the visit of  Uachtarán CLG, John Horan to Newport on Friday 15th March. Following a quick bite to eat at the busy Matt The Threshers in Birdhill, John was whisked away to Lacken Park where he performed the official opening of the new Hurling Wall & Astro Turf which he described as one of the best facilities he has seen in any club in the country. It was a fitting tribute to our Development Officer James Flanagan and everybody else who put in many hours of hard work to have this magnificent facility completed and available to all our players. Also present was Fr Delaney who blessed the new development and members of the Under 14 hurling team then gave a display of drills and skills, undeterred by the wind and rain. The next port of call was the Freigh Inn for the launch of the updated club history ‘By The Mulcaire Banks.’
The singers from Mulcaire Men’s Shed opened the evening with a rousing rendition of Newport Town and in keeping with the theme of the occasion, songs detailing the victories of the 1957, 1965 and 1996 Newport teams were sung by Terry O’Brien, Timmy Floyd and Sean Shinners. Speakers included James Collins (Club Chairman), John Devane (Co Chairman), Michael Collins & Denis Floyd (authors) and John Horan who spoke of the importance of the GAA Club in the community, the handing on of the baton from generation to generation and the admirable work of the officers and leaders of the club over the years in fostering the ideals of Cumann Luthchleas Gael.
Majella Coffey (club secretary) made a presentation to John Horan of a ‘Pónaire Hamper’ from our local Coffee Roastery & Café.  The evening’s entertainment concluded with a magnificent performance from our Scór na bPáistí instrumental music groups.

The club would sincerely like to thank Denis Floyd & Michael Collins for all the hard work & long hours they put into getting this magnificent record of the history of Newport GAA published, Mary Bourke for retyping Volume 1, Maurice Kirby of Mulcair Print for all his advice, help & professionalism, the management & staff of Nenagh Guardian whose records were an invaluable resource and always available to peruse, the current & past officers of the club for all their encouragement to finish the publication & their assistance with keeping & providing club records required to publish the book. Thanks also to the players, officers, mentors past & present who provided vivid memories, stories & photos to make the book a fitting tribute to all who have played a part in the history of our club. We are also indebted to local people and all those with Newport affiliations who, through their patronage, provided generous funding to help defray the cost of the publication.

The club would also like to thank our secretary Majella Coffey for all the work she put in to organising a very successful evening & the ladies who helped with the catering. Thanks, too, to  John Delaney for the excellent video presentation of photos and interviews on the night.

Well done to Martin Ryan (L) who won a free copy of ‘By The Mulcaire Banks’ for naming the team in a recent competition to identify the players in the 'Back to Front' photo. See attached picture of the team from the front. This was taken before the county semi-final of 2000. The missing Number 15 was Dinny Ryan.

The history book is now on sale in the Sweeney’s Circle K Service Station, Pónaire Coffee, Gully’s Daybreak & Hackett’s Pharmacy. It is also available from members of the committee. The 672 x A4 page publication retails at €40.
